Mark Milliman - Focusing on the issues that matter.
EconomyThis election is unlike any other election we have had in our lifetime. It is not about the typical partisan issues often bantered around. It is about restoring and rebuilding our community after the devastation our governor and legislature as caused to our people and economy. Over 10,000 small businesses will never open in our state again while the large companies continue to thrive. Many people are still unemployed or underemployed, and they are in fear of losing their homes. Their children are not receiving the quality education promised by school districts. Low-income and minority households are suffering the most from the governor’s unilateral decision of who opens and who doesn’t. The mental health impact of these closures has had a greater impact on the community, especially the children, than COVID-19.

EducationFully re-opening our schools is key to re-opening and rebuilding our local economy. I’ve been working with the Saint Vrain Valley School District to provide them with fact-based research and analysis to safely and fully reopen our schools. The district provides many services beyond education that enables parents to be able to work while their children are educated. I will continue my support so parents can get back to work. We need to lift the onerous restrictions preventing our small businesses from reopening that give preferences to large companies. I’m working to help these businesses on licensing, employment, and landlord issues they face. Our lower income families need additional resources and assistance while we reboot schools and the economy. We need to make it easier, not harder, for our energy and agriculture industries in the county to grow too.

HousingBoulder County has created many of the issues with housing and homelessness by limiting growth and the type of structures built. Our land use policies must reflect the need for innovative housing. As a part of rebooting our economy, we need to employ our homeless. Many of them have vital skills that businesses need. Shelters are a transitional solution while they are able to start producing an income so they can afford to move into their own home. Boulder County and Longmont must get innovative and look at tiny and manufactured homes as a longer-term solution to the affordable housing situation.
